Buying school shoes in Nairobi: what to look for

Most Nairobi schools require plain formal black shoes with a closed toe, so check the school's uniform list first. Then check the fit, with about a thumb's width of space past the longest toe, a firm sole, clean stitching and a finish that takes polish. For nursery and lower primary pupils choose velcro-strap; from upper primary, lace-up. Buy at the start of term and check again at mid-term, because children's feet grow quickly.

Getting the right school shoe size at the start of term

Fit is the most common problem with school shoes. A shoe that is too big rubs and slips, and one that is too small hurts within days. Check the fit in the afternoon, when feet are slightly larger, and with the socks the child will wear.

1. Measure the foot length, and add about a thumb's width.
2. Check that the child can wiggle their toes.
3. Have the child walk in the shoes, not just stand.
4. Check the heel does not slip.
5. See the full details on our school shoes page and the school uniform price list.

Looking after school shoes so they last the term

• Polish black shoes on Sunday evening, so Monday starts clean.
• Let wet shoes dry away from direct heat, and stuff them with paper.
• Rotate between two pairs where the budget allows.
• Keep laces tied and velcro straps clean, because worn fastenings cause most early replacements.
